3/30/11 - Presentation: “Bob Dylan and the Poetry of the Blues”. Sponsored by the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts, Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, English Department, and the Inst. for African American Studies. Michael Gray, the author of The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia and Song & Dance Man III: The Art Of Bob Dylan, uses records and rare footage to show how hugely Dylan has been inspired by the blues and how much of its poetry has been smuggled inside his own, highly influential writing. 4:00 p.m. 101 Miller Learning Center. 4/1/11 - Reading by Touring Poet Brian Turner. Sponsored by The Georgia Review and the Georgia Poetry Circuit. Turner is a soldier-poet whose debut book of poems, Here, Bullet, a first-person account of the Iraq war, won a number of major awards. Turner served seven years in the US Army, to include one year as an infantry team leader in Iraq with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. Prior to that, he was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1999-2000. His second poetry book, Phantom Noise, was released by Alice James in the Spring of 2010.
