Updated Website!

The online edition of Proetry Magazine has just been revised to include more poems and more visual art!  It now includes all the artwork from the print edition, and even more.  Check it out at ProetryMagazine.com.  You can pick up print copies of the zine at the Live Poets Society Open Mic, every Monday from 6-8pm at Flicker Theatre and Bar on Washington St.  Come by and enjoy some poems, some art, some drink :)

Michael Gray, the author of The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia and Song & Dance Man III: The Art Of Bob Dylan, uses records and rare footage to show how hugely Dylan has been inspired by the blues and how much of its poetry has been smuggled inside his own, highly influential writing. 4:00 p.m. 101 Miller Learning Center. 4/1/11 - Reading by Touring Poet Brian Turner. Sponsored by The Georgia Review and the Georgia Poetry Circuit. Turner is a soldier-poet whose debut book of poems, Here, Bullet, a first-person account of the Iraq war, won a number of major awards. Turner served seven years in the US Army, to include one year as an infantry team leader in Iraq with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. Prior to that, he was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1999-2000. His second poetry book, Phantom Noise, was released by Alice James in the Spring of 2010. New Live Poets Society Open Mic at Flicker Bar!

We had our first open mic in the new space last night & it was fantastic!  I'm going to post some pics here as well as on Facebook so that everyone can see what a good time we had :)  The open mics are taking place in the stage room at Flicker, the room without the bar, and we had tables & chairs set out in the floor space so that everyone could sit down & drink while listening.  It's a great space for an open mic - intimate, cozy, with great acoustics!  There will be no open mic tonight, 1/31/11, as they already had a show planned, but next week there is a poetry open mic at Dog Ear Books and, after that, we plan on alternating Mondays with Dog Ear Books so that Athen's, GA has a Poetry Open Mic EVERY MONDAY!  We may also grab one Wed. a month at Flicker to have a featured poet or a variety show or a performance art night or, y'know, whatever we do...Hope to see everybody soon!

Athens Word of Mouth is Next Wed!

Next Wednesday, October 6, 2010, Word of Mouth Open Mic will be holding its monthly open mic at The Globe on the corner of Clayton and Lumpkin.  It's an awesome open mic with a featured reader; this month's reader is Ralph LaCharity of Cincinatti, Ohio, who I'm sure will be great!  Aralee Strange is the poet who organizes the event and she always chooses amazing poets to feature.  The open mic is free!  The reading is upstairs, so be sure to stop by the bar on your way up.  This is always a fun event with a lot of stupendous readers and guests; there's a break right before the featured reader, as the event usually lasts from 8pm until about 11/11:30pm.  Get there at 8pm sharp to sign up, as the list fills up quickly, but, if you don't, we can always make room for one more!  (I posted a pic of me reading there last month on the side so you can see what the stage is like.  And click here to visit the Word of Mouth website.)  See you next Wednesday!

New Happenings at Proetry.com

Accepting Submissions for our First Issue!

Hello, world.  We are now accepting submissions for our first issue, which is due out in January, 2011.  We are accepting Poetry, Prose & Art from now until the end of November, 2010.  There will be no pre-picked theme for this issue, but we will try to choose pieces that seem to stem from a common thread when we go through all of the pieces we receive.  I am posting the submission guidelines below.  Please contact ProetryEditor@gmail.com for more info.  Thanks for your interest!  Hope to see some of your work in our inbox, or to see that you came to visit us once the new issue is up!

Submission guidelines:

Poetry - Please only submit 3 poems per person.  Put "Poetry Submission" in the Subject of the Email.  Please send each poem in a separate email to ProetryEditor@gmail.com.  Please include contact info at the top or bottom of each email as well.  No poems longer than 2 pages will be accepted.

Prose - Please submit prose pieces less than 4,000 words for the first issue.  Put "Prose Submission" & the genre (Fiction, Non-Fiction, etc.) in the Subject of the Email.  Please send each prose piece in a separate email to ProetryEditor@gmail.com.  Please include contact info at the top or bottom of each email as well.  Please only submit 1 prose piece per person, as there are not that many editors right now and we need time to review the works.

Art - Please only submit 3 pieces of artwork per person.  I am not sure as of yet if the site designer will prefer .PDF files or .JPG files, but I will let you know as soon as I know.  Put "Art Submission" in the Subject of the Email & attach the files to the email, one artwork per email.  Send to: ProetryEditor@gmail.com.

 If you go to the website to check it out (Proetry.com), right now there is just a Site Under Construction notice posted and the website is still setup as the old format, but please come back to see us in January!  Please submit all work via email, as we are no longer accepting submissions directly through the website, while it is under construction.  Thanks!
